Bangladesh’s Measles Outbreak Provides Global Cautionary Tale

Bangladesh is currently grappling with a major measles outbreak that has seen more than 200,000 suspected cases of the disease recorded in the country, so far. Of those suspected cases, 22,000 have been confirmed by laboratory tests. These statistics cover mid-March to early October, according to the World Health Organization.

WHO says 1,147 fatalities due to the disease have so far been recorded in the country, and 94% of those reported deaths are of kids aged five years or less.

The Bangladesh situation underscores how challenging it can be to contain a measles outbreak at a time when vaccination uptake has dipped below 95%. That mark, according to WHO, is the level required to enable herd immunity within a community and forestall outbreaks of the disease.

Bangladesh had reached that threshold prior to 2025, but vaccination rates subsequently dropped following the unrest surrounding the August 2024 ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s government. That unrest disrupted vaccination programs in many ways, such as making it hard to collect data in preparation for vaccination drives. It was also hard for healthcare workers to do their work during the protests. Power outages also made it hard to store vaccines and keep them viable.

Amid those numerous challenges, vaccination uptake dropped to 90%, a number that was below the threshold needed to ensure herd immunity in the country. The disease set in in March, and cases have been spiking and waning since then.

Health authorities say the outbreak has surged so much partly because many parents are skeptical about having their kids vaccinated, but there are also gaps in data collection. They say some regions report vaccination rates above 100% during the first round of inoculations and when data is collected for a subsequent vaccination drive, the numbers reported by those regions exceed what they had initially communicated.

It is therefore hard to get an accurate picture of how many children need to be vaccinated and how many have actually been reached during a targeted program.

What is happening in Bangladesh offers stark lessons and warnings that countries around the globe need to take note of. Disinformation and misinformation about vaccines are rife, and in the U.S., high-profile individuals like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the federal secretary of health, have been vocal in voicing their skepticism about vaccination.

As a result, vaccination rates have been falling, and the U.S. is experiencing measles outbreaks in different states. Employees and executives at firms like Astiva Health in the healthcare sector must be wondering how policymakers are going to reverse the setbacks that vaccination programs have suffered in recent years.
