Early Symptoms of Lung Cancer You Could Be Ignoring

Many times, a diagnosis of lung cancer comes late because the early symptoms may be dismissed since they are so subtle and can be mistaken for other illnesses. However, as with any other cancer, catching lung cancer early offers the best chance of getting better treatment outcomes. We explore some of those early warning signs that you may be downplaying.

When you develop a cough that persists for several weeks, don’t be too quick to dismiss it as just an ordinary cough. Many times, that cough could be the result of an infection, an allergy, or pollution or be dismissed as “smoker’s cough.” However, it could also be pointing to something more serious, like lung cancer, that is developing in the person. It is therefore important to seek further evaluation if that cough persists or changes in the way it manifests.

When you cough up blood, you may think you have an infection in the throat or your throat has just been irritated. While this may be true, there is a chance that you are experiencing the early signs of lung cancer even if the blood in the sputum is barely noticeable. It is therefore wise to have that blood evaluated so that the likelihood of lung cancer is ruled out, or the disease is caught early.

Wheezing and breathlessness often occur when someone gains weight, is aging or has asthma. That aside, these symptoms could also point to the early stages of lung cancer. It is a good idea to consider getting a second opinion, especially if these symptoms persist even if you have any other medical or physical condition that could be contributing to the manifestation of these symptoms.

When your voice becomes raspy or hoarse, don’t dismiss this symptom because it could point to problems with your laryngeal nerve triggered by straining your throat or an infection, or even lung cancer in its initial stages. Err on the side of caution and have an evaluation conducted by an experienced medical professional.

If you experience chest infections that recur, particularly if they impact the same area, you might want to have an examination done to rule out lung cancer. This is because issues like pneumonia or bronchitis could be easily afflicting you as a result of the onset of lung cancer.

Just as you often seek thorough investigations when your mechanic downplays certain abnormal happenings (noises, for example) in your car, so should you be equally vigilant with your body. Anything that feels off or persists calls for additional investigation beyond the initial diagnosis. If doctors diagnose lung cancer early, you significantly increase the odds of beating the disease, especially at this point in time when many new treatments have been commercialized and many companies like Calidi Biotherapeutics Inc. (NYSE American: CLDI) are also making significant progress in developing additional novel treatments against lung cancer.
