Expert Highlights Growing Evidence That Links Respiratory Infections to Cardiovascular Diseases

Not many people know that respiratory infections have been strongly linked to cardiovascular disease events, and this knowledge gap is leading to missed opportunities to use readily accessible vaccines to limit the severity and challenges arising from cardiovascular disease. Professor Colin Russell, based at the School of Medicine at Amsterdam University, explains why it is important to understand the role that respiratory infections play in cardiovascular disease.

He points out that fragmented data on immunization coverage is a leading barrier that prevents vaccination against respiratory infections from making a bigger contribution in the fight against cardiovascular disease. Prof. Russell points out that when vaccination data is fragmented or in silos, it becomes harder to get a clear picture of how vaccination or the lack of it is making cardiovascular disease worse in different jurisdictions.

However, even the limited available data paints a compelling picture that warrants giving infectious disease vaccination more attention in efforts aimed at curbing the toll of cardiovascular disease.

Russell says that when a person has cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections can increase the likelihood of that person developing a blood clot, thereby triggering stroke or a heart attack. Respiratory infections can also result in various complications, such as pneumonia. Such complications can trigger premature death for individuals living with cardiovascular disease.

The professor says the medical community and members of the public need to become more aware of respiratory infections and how serious their medium- to long-term impacts can be. For example, he points out that many adults think flu is a simple condition that they dismiss as “just a cold.” However, flu has the potential to trigger respiratory failure, pneumonia or other grave complications.

It is therefore important for public awareness campaigns to be conducted so that more people learn why getting vaccinated against respiratory infections can contribute to the long-term preservation of their health, especially with respect to cardiovascular disease.

Prof. Russell emphasizes that vaccination remains a key tool in keeping respiratory infections in check while also reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease events.

Another important aspect to emphasize besides respiratory infection vaccination is timely diagnosis and treatment so that the infection isn’t given an opportunity to progress to a level that is severe or puts lives at risk. This is why companies like Co-Diagnostics Inc. (NASDAQ: CODX) focused on developing diagnostic tools that can be used even at home come into the picture. With accessible diagnostic tools readily available, respiratory infections can be promptly addressed so that they don’t worsen cardiovascular disease in patients.
