How Technology Can Be Useful in Mental Health Treatment

We have seen the conversation on mental health and its importance grow recently past as more people share their experiences and stories of the challenges they’ve faced as they dealt with their own mental health disorders. This openness has made it easier for people who may be struggling with mental health issues to seek help, unlike in the past, when mental illnesses such as depression were treated as a taboo subject.

As society becomes more enlightened about mental illnesses and the impact they have, not only on an individual’s life but also society at large, technology is also being used to offer solutions to improve and preserve mental health. Below are a few of the ways in which technology can help in the treatment of some common mental health conditions.

Mood tracking

We have an app for everything these days from productivity apps and banking apps to shopping list apps and mental health apps. Applications such as Moodnotes, which is a popular mood app, can be used to improve self-awareness by helping users establish a pattern to their moods.

If your mood is fluctuating and you’re finding it difficult to keep up, the app also has a journaling feature, which can be used to write down your emotion and feelings at any given moment. You can also use Daylio to track your moods.

If you’re feeling stressed, apps that offer relief from stress include iCBT.

Managing anxiety

You’ve possibly heard of Calm, a popular and free app that you can use to manage your anxiety. The application offers guided meditation techniques and breathing programs that can be used to enhance an individual’s mindfulness.

Other applications in this category include Pacifica, which also has mood tracking exercises and teaches various mindfulness meditation methods.

Mental health

While there are applications that are tailored to a specific mental condition, many mental health apps focus on a wider range of feelings, including anxiety, stress and mood. These apps can be used anywhere, with their portability making them even more useful, particularly for the younger generation, which is more likely to suffer from anxiety and stress.

Apps in this category include Talkspace and Headspace.

Virtual reality

Virtual Reality headsets are being utilized in the desensitization of patients with PTSD by recreating their triggers. These headsets help PTSD patients develop coping mechanisms in safe environments, such as their therapists’ offices or their homes.

This is in addition to helping patients with anxiety and depression, among other disorders.

It should be noted that while most of these technologies enable users to self-treat mental health disorders, best results are achieved when these powerful tools are used in conjunction with professional therapy and counseling.

Many companies, including Mind Cure Health Inc. (CSE: MCUR) (OTCQB: MCURF), are looking to increase the role that AI-powered digital health solutions can have in managing mental health conditions and encouraging the adoption of new ways of living that support mental wellbeing.
