How You Can Support Your Loved One Undergoing Cancer Treatment

Having a loved one diagnosed with cancer can be a very difficult time for that person and those within their immediate circle. It is often difficult to know how to support the patient during their treatment and some people make mistakes in their bid to be supportive. We discuss some suggestions that could be helpful if a loved one is undergoing cancer treatment.

For starters, it is good to focus on what you are good at and offer help along those lines. Don’t try to be or do everything in your bid to help. For example, if you come from a medical background, you can offer to accompany the loved one to their doctor appointments and prepare a list of questions about treatment options, possible side effects, and other related issues. Another person who is a good listener can be with the patient after their treatment sessions and offer emotional support.

Sticking to what you are good at allows you to be most helpful in that area and also leaves room for other members of the patient’s circle to also help in their own way so that everyone feels they are part of this journey or fight against the disease.

Another important tip when supporting someone undergoing cancer treatment is to understand the type of person the individual is and tailor your support accordingly. For example, if the person has a fierce sense of independence, give them an opportunity to do basic tasks for themselves rather than trying to do everything for them as this would irritate them. Only help with what doesn’t overly go against their nature.

Your support doesn’t only have to be at home. If the person is a teacher, for instance, and is passionate about their work, you can find a way to help them ensure that their students are well taken care of, such as by assessing assignments while the patient recovers after a chemo session.

It is also important to take the initiative instead of waiting for the patient to tell you what they need help with. A cancer diagnosis and treatment comes with a heavy mental toll on the patient and they may not be in the right frame to think about everything. It is therefore advisable for you to take the initiative and help where needed even before you are asked for that help.

For example, during a visit to the patient’s home, you can do their laundry if you notice that there is a heap of clothing that needs to be put in the washer. Or, you can fold clothing that was laundered and hasn’t been put away. The patient will appreciate this help. Some things may be hard for the patient to seek help with, so when you take the initiative you ease their life a little bit.

All in all, focus on the patient and their evolving needs as you support them while they undergo treatment. Many treatments take a huge physical toll on patients, and that comes with emotional changes, bouts of depression and other effects. These lived experiences of patients are motivating companies like Soligenix Inc. (NASDAQ: SNGX) to develop a new range of therapeutics that could deliver the needed clinical outcomes while limiting the side effects patients experience.
