Kids with Autism are Less Prone to Severe Injuries Compared to Those with ADHD

New research that appeared in JAMA Network Open discovered that kids with autism have a reduced likelihood of suffering injuries when compared to kids diagnosed with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). This study provides insights that could help in working out how to manage injuries in these different groups of children.

Researchers from Clalit Health Services, Ben-Gurion University, and Loewenstein Rehabilitation Medical Center obtained data on 325,412 kids born from 2005 to 2009 within Israel. They then analyzed this data with a special focus on the rates of injury for kids with autism alone, those with ADHD only, as well as those having autism together with ADHD. For a control group, the team also analyzed data on kids developing normally.

The researchers found that kids having ADHD, autism and those with a combination of both conditions tended to have more Emergency Department visits when compared to the control group which didn’t have any of these developmental disorders.

They also found that kids having ADHD tended to require more ED visits for the different injury types observed in the data on the study subjects. However, kids with autism were observed to make more ED visits for ingestion injuries and inhalation injuries. It is also noteworthy that kids with ASD tended to have fewer ED visits for animal-inflicted or orthopedic injuries.

The team reported an unexpected finding that kids with ASD and those with a combination of ADHD and ASD tended to have the same likelihood or sometimes lower occurrences of injuries requiring ED visits when compared to the control group that grew up normally.

The researchers posit that this lower rate of injuries among ASD kids could be because they suffer from anxiety, which tends to keep them away from the various activities that can result in physical injuries. They also think the lower injury rates could be a result of the additional supervision that ASD kids receive from their caregivers, therapists and educators. This supervision possibly averts several of the possible injuries that they could have suffered.

The researchers also posit that ASD kids tend to suffer more inhalation or burn injuries at home due to the limited awareness that these kids have about the risks of these injuries within the home.

These study results draw attention to the different profiles of injuries that kids with ASD or ADHD suffer from or are more likely to suffer from. The findings draw attention to the need to design proactive ways to prevent such injuries in these groups of kids that need special care.
