Patient Plays Sax During Lengthy Surgery to Remove Brain Tumor

Last week, a musician had his brain tumor removed while fully conscious during a nine-hour surgery that took place in Italy. During the operation, which was carried out at the Paideia International Hospital in Rome, the 35-year old musician played his saxophone. This helped the surgeon map out different functions of the brain as he operated.

Dr. Christian Brogna, the neurosurgeon who performed the operation, stated in an interview that there were no negative effects observed in the patient after the tumor was successfully removed. Brogna led a team of highly qualified specialists during the operation, which used state-of-the-art technology.

The brain tumor was located in a complex area of the brain, and the patient being left-handed complicated the surgery even more. This meant that the surgeons had to be more tactful in extraction to prevent any damage.

At different times during the operation, the patient played the Italian national anthem and the theme song from the 70s movie, “Love Story.” The patient had emphasized how important it was that his musical ability be preserved, which was why he was kept awake and playing throughout the whole operation.

Brogna explained that playing an instrument was a high cognitive function because it involved not only understanding music but also interacting with one’s instrument, exercising one’s memory and coordinating using both hands as well as counting. The neurosurgeon prepared for the complex surgery in advance, noting that every patient has a unique brain, which meant that the surgeon needed to know the patient in detail as well as learn what functions were most important to preserve.

To prepare, the surgeon met with the patient and the medical team six or seven times before the surgery.

Brogan explained that during brain surgery, it is important to ensure that no damage is done to an individual’s personality, how they function daily and how they feel about emotions; he noted that protecting the patient’s wishes was a primary objective. He added that preparation also gives surgeons time to ensure that the patient is aware of everything the procedure entails. This is in addition to allowing surgeons to reassure patients and instruct them on what not to do during the operation.

Following the surgery’s success, Brogna acknowledged that he was proud that the patient had been able to resume life with no hitches, adding that every surgery also advances his knowledge in this particular branch of medicine.
