On Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders authored a letter that he sent to Democrats in both chambers of Congress urging them to band together and support the Affordable Care Act. He wrote that a lot more can be done to improve healthcare in the country and made six suggestions that can help in attaining this objective.
He appeals for an extension to the ACA tax credits designed to lower the cost of health insurance for people who aren’t eligible for Medicare yet they don’t have sufficient employer-provided medical cover. These tax credits were at the heart of the recently-ended government shutdown, and the government was only reopened with a promise that a vote would be conducted on the matter in December.
Sanders also recommends that the cuts to Medicaid and the ACA contained in the Big Beautiful Bill that was passed into law be repealed. These cuts amount to approximately $1 trillion. Already, health insurance firms are hiking premiums, in some cases even doubling them, since the ACA tax cuts take effect at the end of this year. Reversing those funding cuts would therefore provide massive relief to families.
Another suggestion that Sanders asks his Democratic colleagues to fight for is to expand Medicare so that it covers vision, dental and hearing. Currently, these are paid for out of pocket and these costs increase the financial burden borne by families that need these services. With medical debt driving millions of Americans into financial ruin, any relief provided would be a lifesaver for those who are struggling to meet the high cost of medical care.
Sanders also wants prescription medication costs reduced by 50% in America through legislation. Such a law would require drug makers to price these prescription drugs at levels that are equal to but don’t exceed what those same drugs cost in Canada or Europe. The removal of those price disparities would significantly lower the cost burden on people who rely on prescription medications to manage chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiac conditions.
It is also necessary to invest additional resources in teaching and community health centers and the National Health Service Corps. Such investments would expand primary healthcare and address health issues promptly before they progress and become costly to treat. More emphasis would also be directed towards preventive care.
Finally, Sen. Sanders says Congress should ban dividends and stock buybacks for companies in the healthcare sector. Compensation for CEOs also needs to be restricted so that overhead costs that trickle down to citizens can be minimized.
It is unclear how different lawmakers perceive these recommendations made by Sen. Sanders, but what is undeniable is the need to reform the healthcare system. Entities like Astiva Health have no other option but to try as best they can to serve the communities they focus on within the existing legal framework.
