What You Should Know About Traumatic Brain Injuries and PTSD

Brain injuries usually occur when an individual is involved in some trauma such as a fall, a blast or an accident while traumatic brain injuries occur from a sudden jolt or blow to the head. Traumatic brain injuries can be severe, moderate or mild, and are similar to concussions. Oftentimes, when individuals refer to traumatic brain injuries, they talk about the symptoms that occur following the injury, forgetting the fact that a traumatic brain injury is an actual injury.

Nearly 80% of all traumatic brain injuries in people are considered mild, with a majority of these patients fully recovering in three months without the need for special treatment. Sometimes, patients with severe or moderate traumatic brain injuries also make exceptional recoveries.

Symptoms resulting from a traumatic brain injury are referred to as post-concussion syndrome. Some individuals display all the symptoms while some only exhibit one or a few. The most common symptoms following a traumatic brain injury can be categorized as emotional, mental and physical.

Emotional symptoms include changes in personality, anxiety, anger outbursts and depression while mental symptoms include trouble putting thoughts into words, acting without thinking, poor judgement, trouble with being focused and memory issues. Physical symptoms include noise and light sensitivity, vision problems, sleep problems, fatigue, dizziness and headaches. In addition, severe cases may experience seizures and reduced response to standard medications.

Since traumatic brain injuries are caused by trauma, some patients may also develop post-traumatic stress disorder (“PTSD”). Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that is brought about by experiencing distressing, frightening or stressful events and/or witnessing said events.

Most traumatic brain injury symptoms are similar to those of PTSD, which may make it harder for physicians to diagnose the injury. Symptoms of PTSD include severe anxiety, severe emotional distress, issues with one’s memory, negative thoughts about oneself or others, trouble sleeping, concentration problems, change in one’s personality, outbursts of anger and irritability as well as self-destructive behavior.

PTSD’s symptoms usually vary in intensity as time goes by, which makes it even more important for individuals who may have been injured to be diagnosed by a skilled clinician. Clinicians note that it is important to be evaluated because the effects of the injury could be severe, no matter how mild the injury itself was. In addition, individuals with traumatic brain injuries shouldn’t use some medications as they may do more harm than good.

With companies such as Mind Cure Health Inc. (CSE: MCUR) (OTCQB: MCURF) actively studying compounds such as ibogaine for their efficacy in the treatment of TBI, an effective remedy could be on the horizon.
