Research Finds Taking Vitamin D Supplements While Pregnant Reduces Eczema Risk in Infants

New research has found that pregnant women who take vitamin D supplements during their pregnancy considerably reduce the likelihood of their infant developing eczema. Eczema is a noncontagious chronic skin condition that causes an individual’s skin to become itchy and dry. While the primary cause isn’t known, the condition may be triggered by allergens or environmental factors. Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be found in foods such as egg yolks and oily fish. This vitamin, which is also available as a dietary supplement, is also produced in the body when UV rays from the sun trigger…

Organ Donation, Transplantation: Challenges and How We Can Help More Individuals

National Donate Life Month is celebrated every April, with events held throughout the month to increase awareness about organ donation. This month also encourages more individuals to register as donors while also honoring people who have changed lives by donating. The surgical procedures made possible through organ donation save and also change the lives of many. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people in America are waiting for life-saving organ transplants.  In addition to a shortage of viable organs, the financial costs associated with organ transplants are astounding. This factor limits people in need of transplants as well as…

Study Finds Traditional Chinese Medicine May Create New Way to Treat Brain Cancer

Scientists have determined that a drug derived from a certain natural compound could help create a new way to treat glioblastoma, as observed in mouse models. Glioblastoma (glioblastoma multiforme) is an aggressive form of brain cancer that invades brain tissue. The standard of care for this cancer is radiation, chemotherapy and surgery, which may alleviate some symptoms but doesn’t halt the cancer. The average life expectancy following diagnosis is roughly 15 months. The study was a collaboration between different institutions, including Harvard Medical School and Brown University. The compound in question, indirubin, is an active ingredient of Dang Gui Long…

NIH Research Links Eczema Onset to Air Pollution

New research has found that pollutants found in the air may cause eczema in infants. Eczema, also referred to atopic dermatitis, is a condition that causes an individual’s skin to become itchy and extremely dry. This skin condition affects more than 31 million Americans. Eczema often develops in infancy and peaks in early childhood. However, flare-ups may occur even in adults when an individual comes into contact with allergens such as dyes, pets, perfumes or even food. While it is common knowledge that genetics may make one more susceptible to developing eczema, researchers are yet to determine its exact cause.…

Study Finds That Different Subtypes of Epilepsy Trigger Different Autoimmune Conditions

Scientists may have identified a pair of epilepsy syndrome patterns and their link to autoimmune illnesses. The single-center study was carried out between January 2016 and December 2020 and involved patients at a tertiary epilepsy center. During this period, the researchers gathered data from 242 patients suffering from mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis and 422 patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsies (IGEs). The researchers observed that, on average, patients who suffered from idiopathic generalized epilepsies were more than a decade younger than those with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS) They also noted that autoimmune disease prevalence…

Mechanical Nanosurgery Could Revolutionize Brain Cancer Treatment

Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer that invades brain tissue. The average life expectancy following diagnosis for this cancer is 14 to 16 months. Globally, the standard of care for patients with this type of cancer includes chemotherapy with temozolomide, which extends a patient’s expectancy by about two months. Patients may also undergo radiotherapy as well as surgery to remove tumors. However, even after rigorous treatment cycles, glioblastoma cells may develop resistance to temozolomide over time, heightening the chances of tumor relapse and decreasing its effectiveness. Researchers at the University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children may have…
