More American Doctors are Relocating to Canada, Citing Federal Government Issues

As U.S. news outlets focus on the economic turmoil triggered by tariffs, another story is quietly developing. More doctors trained and working in the U.S. are relocating to Canada and the reasons they are giving rotate around the actions and policies of the Trump administration.

Michael, a pseudonym, is one such doctor who left the U.S. to work in Canada. He says America is changing into a country that steps on the vulnerable and weak, in contrast to the training which makes physicians kind to individuals during their weakest moments. For him, the turning point was when a mob stormed Capitol Hill in a bid to block Biden’s electoral victory from being certified. Michael was mortified by how quickly vigilantism was becoming an acceptable form of expression.

Michael packed his bags and moved his family to Canada during the first weeks of Trump’s current administration.

Michael isn’t the only American doctor who is disillusioned with what the U.S. society is becoming. Canada’s medical council revealed that physiciansapply.ca, a site which is the first point of contact for doctors wishing to obtain a license to practice in Canada, has seen a 750% bump in the number of American doctors applying in the past 7 months in comparison to the same time the previous year. In actual numbers, 615 U.S. doctors have expressed interest in 7 months compared to just 71 applications in the same duration last year.

Some specific steps taken by the Trump administration that may have rubbed doctors the wrong way include ignoring due process and disregarding court orders, major reductions to Medicaid funding, reallocating money that was originally earmarked for pandemic preparedness, demonizing fluoride, staff cuts to federal medical agencies, and the administration’s choice of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as HHS Secretary. RFK Jr. has controversial views on how people can preserve their health, and many doctors regard his views as pseudoscience.

It is important to note that Canada’s healthcare system provides universal care funded by the government. This is in contrast to the U.S. system which is largely privately funded and the government only funds Medicare and Medicaid for sections of the population. Many doctors in the U.S. complain about the heavy bureaucracy associated with the country’s system since it sometimes puts financial interests above the needs of patients.

Provinces in Canada are aware of the challenges facing the U.S. healthcare system, and some are actively advertising themselves as being free from those bottlenecks. For example, Doctors Manitoba, a group uniting doctors in Manitoba, kicked off a recruitment drive targeting physicians from America. It promises that there will be no political interference in the way doctors relate with their patients.

Over time, the extent to which doctors are leaving the U.S. and opting to work elsewhere, such as Canada, will become clearer. What hasn’t yet been examined is how this could affect the hospital networks that Medical Advantage plan providers like Astiva Health and other health insurance firms work with.
