Initiatives to Erase Medical Debt Gain Traction Across the US

According to KFF research conducted in 2022, about 100 million individuals in the U.S. are saddled with medical debt. This debt often makes it nearly impossible for them to afford other necessities of life, including additional medical care. As lawmakers on Capitol Hill drag their feet on enacting definitive remedies to the escalating healthcare costs, state governments and philanthropists are taking action to wipe medical debt away.

Undue Medical Debt is a nonprofit organization that is focused on mobilizing donations and using the funds it gets to wipe away the crippling medical debt that low-income earners in the U.S. face.

The nonprofit has come up with a model through which it buys medical debt and then forgives those debts. The math is impressive: a donation of $10 to the nonprofit cancels about $1,000 worth of medical debt. Literally, the debt is acquired at pennies on the dollar. Such a huge return on donated money has attracted many donors who wish to support the work that the entity undertakes.

Several states have taken action to leverage this nonprofit in efforts to relieve the burden of medical debt within their jurisdictions. For example, Evan Spiegel, the CEO of Snap Inc., together with his wife, made donations to the organization in June this year. Their involvement resulted in medical debt worth $550m being wiped out in California. About 261,000 low-income Californians benefited from this initiative.

In Michigan, collaborations between Governor Whitmer and Undue Medical Debt resulted in debt relief worth $74 million in June this year. A previous collaboration completed in July last year had seen medical debt to the tune of $144 million forgiven.

Connecticut has also worked with Undue Medical Debt since 2024. In that time, four rounds of debt relief have been completed. In total, 250,000 residents of the state have seen just over half a billion dollars’ worth of medical debt wiped away.

While these efforts may look miniscule when compared to the total medical debt across the country, the debt relief provides a major lifeline to each person whose debt is wiped away. As Congress drags its feet on taking concrete steps to address the drivers of rising medical costs, initiatives like those operated by Undue Medical Debt could be the only hope that many desperate people cling onto.

For entities like Astiva Health that work with vulnerable groups, such as racial minorities in California, the burden of skyrocketing healthcare costs is visible on a daily basis.
