Global Drugmakers Earmark Billions to Ramp Up Their US Footprint

Dozens of global drugmakers are ramping up their investments in the United States in a bid to sidestep the planned tariffs on drug imports. In total, ongoing investments and planned expansions amount to approximately $500 billion.

These planned investments are intended to not only reassure investors but also mitigate risks linked to global supply chains, such as the evolving tariff environment.

Last September, Pfizer engaged in discussions with Trump, and the drugmaker undertook to invest about $70 billion in domestic R&D as well as manufacturing. In exchange, Trump granted the company an exemption of three years from any tariffs that are imposed on drug imports into the U.S. The deal was signed on September 30.

In 2025, Eli Lilly revealed that it planned to construct four plants in the U.S. to ramp up its manufacturing and also boost medical supply chains. In total, the company pledged to invest more than $27 billion in these expansion plans. The facilities will be located in Texas, Virginia, Alabama and Pennsylvania.

Johnson & Johnson revealed that it intends to increase its investments in the United States by 25%, amounting to $55 billion. This money will be invested over the coming four years. The company will construct two plants in North Carolina, and another in Florida has already received an investment boost of a billion dollars.

AstraZeneca intends to inject a total of $50 billion into its U.S. expansion plans by the end of this decade. The bulk of this money will go towards setting up a manufacturing plant in Virginia, while the remaining money will go to expanding the firm’s existing facilities in Massachusetts, Texas, California, Maryland and Indiana.

Merck also plans to channel more investment capital into its operations in the U.S. Construction work is ongoing at a manufacturing facility in Virginia, a project that is worth $3 billion. Another plant worth a billion dollars is planned for construction in Delaware to make biologics as well as the firm’s cancer drug called Keytruda. In total, the firm is looking to invest at least $70 billion in its bid to ramp up its operations in the U.S.

Other U.S. pharmaceutical companies like Amgen, AbbVie, Gilead Sciences and so many others have also revealed plans to boost their investments in the United States. The big question on everyone’s mind, including the public and health sector entities like Astiva Health, is whether these investments will help in lowering the skyrocketing cost of healthcare for Americans. Only time will tell.
