Experts Discuss Addiction and How to Support Individuals Battling the Disease

Researchers at the University of Virginia are conducting new research that will assist in identifying and helping individuals who are struggling with addiction, through the institution’s Center for Leading Edge Addiction Research (“CLEAR”), which develops addiction treatments.

Data from the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics shows that between 2009 and 2019, the number of overdose-related fatalities recorded for individuals aged 15 to 24 grew to 4,777 from less than 3,400 deaths. This increase has been linked to opioid overdoses, some of which are caused by fentanyl laced cocaine.

Studies by the Addiction Center have found that in comparison to individuals who didn’t attend a full-time, four-year program, college students were more likely to abuse drugs because of increased course load, stress, peer pressure and curiosity. The center also found that students involved in Greek life were 25% more likely to experience substance abuse compared to other students.

Nassima Ait-Daoud Tiouririne, the director of CLEAR, stated that it was important to keep the field of addiction research rich with new ways and approaches of treating addiction. Among the approaches the director has implemented at the center is the opioid helpline, which is a confidential helpline that people can call for various opioid-related questions.

Ait-Daoud Tiouririne revealed that the key primary groups of individuals who called the helpline were individuals experiencing addiction and seeking help, and individuals who had been prescribed opioids and would like advice on how to avoid addiction. The director explained that most people with addiction needed somebody to talk to, to educate them as well as connect with them. Ait-Daoud Tiourine added that knowing how to respond to a loved one who was battling addiction was useful, especially with the use of opioids among students increasing. When one is approached by a loved one seeking help, avoiding accusatory language was very important, said Ait-Daoud Tiourine, because it would not be productive and would only add to the stigma surrounding addiction. The director notes that being heard is a crucial first step in recovery.

Addicted.org is another organization that’s helping fight addiction. The company has established a drug treatment center in Charlottesville to aid in the opioid epidemic. Addicted.org has also developed a treatment locator service that assists patients to find a place near them that can meet their needs for various substance abuse issues. The organization also published information about addiction to help eliminate the stigma surrounding addiction, which research has found mirrors brain disease.
