Fibromyalgia and the Future of Telehealth

Fibromyalgia is an acute illness that can present as cognitive dysfunction, lack of energy, intense fatigue and abnormal pain among other symptoms. Sometimes, individuals who suffer from this condition may experience flares, when their symptoms get too intense. This makes it harder for them to perform simple tasks, even struggling to make it to doctor’s appointments. However, the coronavirus pandemic and improvements in technology have made it possible for fibromyalgia patients to access telehealth appointments, which allows them to talk with their doctor remotely, either via tablet, phone or computer, while they’re home.

Patients can now schedule telehealth appointments with their nurse practitioners, doctors and other healthcare providers, which eliminates the need to spend energy and time getting ready for an appointment and commuting to a physician’s office. It should be noted that telehealth is suitable for situations when a patient will be having discussions with their healthcare provider  but not physical examinations.

Patients can use telehealth to:

  • Review test results with your physician
  • Get prescription refills
  • Report any nonemergent side effects
  • Discuss treatment or medication follow-ups

Individuals should also keep in mind that some medications that are prescribed for fibromyalgia, such as tricyclic antidepressants, may require physical exams because they are known to cause severe side effects including high blood pressure.

Additionally, patients will need to schedule an in-person appointment with their physicians if:

  • They require immediate care for any serious symptoms or side effects
  • Their vital signs require monitoring
  • They need lab work
  • They’ve noticed new symptoms that need to be examined physically

When preparing for a telehealth appointment with a physician, patients should write down the questions they want to ask in order to ensure that they don’t forget. They should also record any new symptoms they’ve noticed, along with the severity of those symptoms and the effectiveness of any treatments prescribed.

Furthermore, when scheduling the telehealth appointment, patients should ask about:

  • The length of the appointment
  • Who they will be talking to — a physician’s assistant, nurse or doctor
  • Whether insurance will cover the appointment
  • Whether the appointment will include video and audio or audio alone
  • Whether they will need to provide information about blood pressure, weight, etc.

Telehealth appointments not only alleviate the strain of having in-person visits but also protect patients from contracting diseases that can aggravate fibromyalgia or bring about flares in the long term. In addition to this, telehealth appointments seem to be a solid trend, with a 2020 survey finding that more than 80% of individuals had a higher chance of choosing healthcare providers who provided telehealth appointments.

With companies such as Tryp Therapeutics Inc. (CSE: TRYP) (OTCQB: TRYPF) focused on developing psilocybin-based therapeutics for fibromyalgia, it won’t be long before patients may have access to an alternative to existing remedies.
