Mental Health America Publishes Annual Mental Health Status Report

Mental Health America recently published its annual report on the status of mental health within the country. The report ranks the District of Columbia and the 50 states based on various mental health prevalence and access measures.

This year’s top-three ranking states were Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, in that order. The bottom-three ranking states were Arizona, Idaho and Nevada, also in that order. In the past eight years, the state of Nevada has occupied the bottom position in six such annual reports.

The state of South Carolina recorded the biggest increase over 2020’s overall ranking, moving from number 43 to number 30. On the other hand, the state of Texas recorded the largest drop from last year’s general ranking, moving from number 27 to 44.

The report also shows an alarming increase in the number of individuals admitting to have serious suicidal thoughts. In comparison to last year’s number, the report recorded a 664,000 increase in suicidal ideation. The national suicidal ideation rate among individuals has grown in every report, year on year. However, this increment is concerning given that it is higher than what was observed last year.

The data also shows an increase in the fraction of young people who admit having a major depressive incident within the last year, noting that one in five young people between the ages of 12 and 17 underwent a depressive episode. This increase is in comparison to last year’s numbers.

In addition to this, the report found that more than 60% of young people suffering from major depressive disorder don’t get mental health remedies/treatments. This applies even to states with the highest levels of access to mental health intervention/treatment, with the data showing that almost one in every three individuals were living without treatments. For instance, almost seven in ten of young people suffering from major depressive disorder within the state of Texas didn’t get mental health intervention/treatment.

Additionally, the report presents a larger snapshot of the individuals having a mental health condition in America and whether or not they had insurance coverage. It found that almost 50 million individuals in America, which makes up about 20%, have a mental health condition. Of this number, more than 27 million don’t receive any treatment. The report also found that 11% of Americans living with a mental health condition were uninsured. This figure represents a 0.3% surge in comparison with last year’s numbers.

Mental Health America gathered current data that was available to the public as well as that reported by the states to compile the report.

These alarming statistics make an even stronger case for the development of a new class of mental health treatments, such as those being worked on by companies such as Cybin Inc. (NYSE American: CYBN) (NEO: CYBN), in order to stem the tide of mental health disorders.
