Research Finds Fibromyalgia Patients More Prone to Social Media Addiction

Fibromyalgia syndrome is a chronic condition that causes tenderness of joints, tendons and muscles, as well as stiffness and pain. This condition has also been linked to anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and fatigue, which affects the daily lives of these patients both psychologically and physically. A recently conducted study assessed social media use in patients who suffer from this condition in an effort to determine the impact it had on sleep quality and ailment severity. The study’s findings were published in “Advances in Rheumatology.”

For their study, the researchers recruited 205 patients all aged below 18, who used social media. Of this number, 102 belonged to the control group while the remaining were fibromyalgia patients. The researchers factored in demographics such as body mass index, weight, height, occupation, age, sex, marital status and educational status and used the visual analog scale to evaluate pain severity.

In addition to this, they used the widespread pain index and the FMS symptom severity scale to assess disease severity, the Social Media Addiction Scale-Adult Form to study social media habits and the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System to examine each participant’s sleep satisfaction, adequacy, depth and quality.

In their report, the researchers stated that while there were studies that had found a link between extreme use of social media and sleep disorders, anxiety and depression, there existed no studies that studied social media use in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome. The researchers carried out the cross-sectional analysis at the PMR Clinic of Bursa City Hospital but discovered no correlation between the severity of the condition and social media use in patients with the disease.

However, they did discover that in comparison with individuals who have other occupations, students spent more time on social media, noting that time spent reduced as age increased. In their report, the investigators also noted that social media use was most likely affected by an individual’s marital status, level of education, occupation, gender and age.

The study had some limitations, including the fact that patients with sleep disorders, depression, anxiety and fibromyalgia syndrome weren’t compared with the control group. The researchers also found it hard to determine cause and effect relationships using these results. In their conclusion, the researchers stated that social media use was linked to the symptoms that accompany fibromyalgia syndrome. They asserted that given that their study was the first to explore the relationship between fibromyalgia and the use of social media, it would be useful as a future guide for more detailed studies.

At the moment, fibromyalgia is extremely difficult to treat. However, companies such as Tryp Therapeutics Inc. (CSE: TRYP) (OTCQB: TRYPF) are looking to develop a new class of remedies for this condition, and significant steps have been taken in this regard.
